Singlet magnetism in heavy fermions.

We consider singlet magnetism for the uranium ions in UPt3 and URu2Si2 assuming that time-reversal symmetry is broken for the coherent state of intermediate valence. The relative weight of the two involved configurations should be different for UPt3 and URu2Si2. If in UPt3 the configuration 5f 1 on the U-ion prevails in the coherent state below the magnetic transition, the magnetic moment would...

Soft Interaction of Heavy Fermions *

We discuss a formula for the sum of tree diagrams of n-bosons scattering from a heavy fermion. This formula can be considered as a generalization of the eikonal formula to include non-abelian vertices. It will be used to demonstrate the consistency of multi-meson-fermion scattering in the large-N c limit.

Dipole formalism with heavy fermions

We extend the dipole formalism of Catani and Seymour to QCD processes involving heavy fermions. We give the appropriate subtraction terms together with their integrated counterpart. All calculations are done within dimensional regularization. Our formulae can be used with three variants of dimensional regularization (conventional dimensional regularization, the ’t Hooft-Veltman scheme or the fo...

Resistance minimum and heavy fermions

The phenomenon of the resistance minimum in dilute magnetic alloys is explained in terms of the s-d interaction which takes account of scattering of the conduction electron off the magnetic impurities in metals. Some of the intermetallic compounds which involve rare earth elements or uranium show a very large electronic specific heat and remain non-magnetic even though they show a Curie-like su...

Heavy fermions and quantum phase transitions.

Quantum phase transitions arise in many-body systems because of competing interactions that promote rivaling ground states. Recent years have seen the identification of continuous quantum phase transitions, or quantum critical points, in a host of antiferromagnetic heavy-fermion compounds. Studies of the interplay between the various effects have revealed new classes of quantum critical points ...
